Quilting

Quilting in America was born out of simple fact—there was a shortage of fabric. It was the ingenuity of the early settlers that turned a need into an art form. Today, in Chicago, Envision is bringing back quilt-making to address another chronic shortage, this time dealing with the fabric of society. It's a shortage of jobs and the shamefully high level of unemployment--estimated at 70%--among the nation's adults with disabilities.

Quilt production—and jobs—are rapidly on the rise. Envision entered an agreement with the Oak-Park based, "FunQuilts" company to produce a popular baby quilt. The big order has generated invaluable hours of paid employment for workers seeking not just a wage, but a sense of purpose and pride in accomplishment.

"It's encouraging to see how a time honored, traditional craft like quilt-making–when given the right twist, may create new jobs for men and women with disabilities in today's challenging economic climate."
