Lane Wyrick’s award-winning film focuses on the indomitable power of the human spirit and the importance of having a small, but reliable support system of friends.  Wyrick will introduce the screening and host a Q&A discussion after the conclusion of the 90-minute feature length production.

"A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" gives viewers the opportunity to know the real Bill Sackter, a man who resided at the Faribault Institution in Minnesota 44 years of his life for simply having a diagnosis of mild mental retardation.  The film uses actual video footage and photos of Mr. Sackter, accompanied by poignant interviews with the people closest to Bill.

In 1981, actor Mickey Rooney portrayed Bill Sackter's life in the highly successful television drama "Bill" which won two Golden Globe Awards.

Of relevance, the State of Illinois ranks 51^st nationally in terms of supporting people with disabilities in community settings; yet despite the fact that over 20 years of scientific research conclusively shows that people--like Bill Sackter, have higher qualities of life in community-based settings, the total institutional population in Illinois is more than double the national average
